Welcome to our grade 9 students
Posted on 08/11/2026

As a grade 9 student at Stayner Collegiate Institute (SCI) you are about to embark on an exciting and rewarding year.  It is our intention to help you plan for a successful school year.  SCI offers a diverse program that will allow you to learn both in and out of the classroom.  Success at the secondary level is different for all students, and with that in mind, you are encouraged to set goals for yourself for this school year and to strive to meet them.  By setting and reaching your own goals you will meet success.

The information below outlines some key points about our school, however we expect all students to be familiar with the more detailed information found in the Student Handbook posted online at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca. After reading this information, please do not hesitate to ask questions.  Over the school year, if you have any difficulties or concerns, in addition to your subject teachers, there are other staff members who will be willing to provide you with assistance.  Our Principal and Vice Principal have their offices in the main office area.  Our Guidance (room 102) and Student Success (room 103) teachers are available to answer questions and provide support.  Special Education can be contacted in the Resource Room (room 203).

Here is everything you need to know:

Code of Conduct/Computer Use

The SCI Code of Conduct has been developed to provide a safe and healthy environment in which students may have a successful learning experience.  The Code of Conduct is available online at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca/ and a paper copy can be obtained at our main office upon request.  The Code of Conduct must be read by students and parents, including the Computer Use guidelines. Parents/guardians should then indicate they have read these items by checking the appropriate boxes and signing the Permissions & Acknowledgements forms in SchoolCash online.  These signed forms should be completed and submitted by the end of the first week of school.

Buses

If you are a new student to SCI, you should have received a letter before summer that contains the details of your new bussing information.  Memorize your bus route number and departure time so that you can find your bus after school.  If you need help, please call our office at 705-428-2639, extension 42859.

Locks and Lockers

Grade 9 students will be able to get their locker at the Grade 9 Spartan Start or on Wednesday, September 9, during lunch. Locks may be purchased from SchoolCash online for $9.50. All locks must be combination locks and must be registered with the office.  It is recommended that all locks be purchased from the school.  These locks are of good quality and sold at cost.

Keep your lock combination a secret.  Do not share your locker or your lock combination with anyone and keep your locker locked at all times.  Please only post with magnets or masking tape in your locker.  Do not use pens or markers on the inside or outside of your locker.  You are responsible for keeping your school locker clean, neat & organized.

Timetables & Homeroom Classes

Students can access their timetable online in their Student Portal by going to http://ps.scdsb.on.ca/. On the first day of school, students will be able to check the alphabetical list in the hall to find the location of their period one class.

Student Activity Photo ID Cards

Your student activity card will be available for sale in SchoolCash online for $40.00 and payment is due by photo day.  Grade 9-12 students must have this card to participate in any teams, clubs, dances and other school activities.  The funds collected for the student activity cards help support all student activities and student led projects during the school year. This card can also be used as official photo identification.

Attendance

Attendance in classes is mandatory.  All absences must be preceded by a note, email or phone call from parents/guardians providing a suitable reason and time frame for the absence.  Parents can call 1-888-885-8065 or email [email protected] with absence information 24/7.  Families planning vacations during the school year should complete an extended absence form, available in the main office. Please read the information on attendance in the Student Handbook.  We also use SchoolMessenger, a computerized attendance program that automatically calls home for any student who has an unauthorized absence.

Tobacco & Vaping Products

In order to encourage a healthy lifestyle, Simcoe County District School Board does not permit the use of tobacco or vape products on school property.  Please read the information in the Student Handbook.  Students using tobacco or vape products on school property such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff will be sent to the office and consequences will be assigned.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are not permitted during instructional time, unless directed by an educator. If you need to get a message to your student, please contact the main office at 705-428-2639.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria will be open before school, during the morning break and the lunch period.  Eating is permitted in the lobby or the cafeteria only.  Please keep your school clean by remembering to clean the area where you were eating.  SCI is proud to be a Green school -- garbage containers, compost bins and recycling boxes are placed at the front and back of the cafeteria for your use.

Dress Code

All attire must meet the expectations of the SCDSB dress code.  Please refer to the Student Handbook for further information.

Student Handbook

The Handbook outlines the policies and procedures in place at SCI.  Students and parents/guardians are responsible for reading the information in the Handbook.  The Student Handbook is posted on the School Website at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca.  If you require a paper copy, please call the school at (705) 428-2639.
