As a grade 7 or 8 student at Stayner Collegiate Institute (S.C.I.) you are about to embark on an exciting and rewarding year. It is our intention to help you plan for a successful school year. S.C.I. offers a diverse program that will allow you to learn both in and out of the classroom. Success is different for all students, and with that in mind, you are encouraged to set goals for yourself for this school year and to strive to meet them. By setting and reaching your own goals you will meet success.
The information below outlines some key points about our school, however we expect all students to be familiar with the more detailed information found in the Student Handbook posted online at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca. After reading this information, please do not hesitate to ask questions. Over the school year, if you have any difficulties or concerns, in addition to your classroom teachers, there are other staff members who will be willing to provide you with assistance. Our Principal and Vice Principal have their offices in the main office area. Special Education can be contacted in the Resource Room (203).

Code of Conduct/Computer Use
The S.C.I. Code of Conduct has been developed to provide a safe and healthy environment in which students may have a successful learning experience. The Code of Conduct is available online at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca/ and a paper copy can be obtained at our main office upon request. The Code of Conduct must be read by students and parents, including the Computer Use guidelines. Parents/guardians should then indicate they have read these items by checking the appropriate boxes and signing the Permissions & Acknowledgements forms in SchoolCash online. These forms should be completed and submitted as soon as possible.
Buses
All new students should have received a letter before summer that contains the details of your new bussing information. Memorize your bus route number and departure time so that you can find your bus after school. If you need help, please call our office at 705-428-2639, extension 42859.
Locks and Lockers
Students in grades 7 and 8 will be assigned a locker at the start of the school year. Locks may be purchased from SchoolCash online for $9.50. All locks must be combination locks. It is recommended that all locks be purchased from the school. These locks are of good quality and are sold at cost. Keep your lock combination a secret. Do not share your locker or your lock combination with anyone.
Attendance
Attendance in classes is mandatory. All absences must be preceded by a note, email or phone call from parents/guardians providing a suitable reason and time frame for the absence. Grade 7/8 parents can excuse their child’s absence through the SM Home app, at SchoolMessenger, or by calling 1-833-275-6699. These services are available 24/7. Families planning vacations during the school year should complete an extended absence form, which is available in the main office. Please read the information on Attendance in the Student Handbook. Safe Arrival phone calls will go home once in the morning and once after lunch for any students who are absent from school.
Cell Phones
Cell phones are not permitted during class time. Students may choose to keep their phone in their locker or in the lockbox in the classroom. If you need to get a message to your student, please call the office at 705-428-2639.
Lunch
Students in grade 7 & 8 require parent permission to leave school at lunch time. We have a supervision schedule in place that balances opportunities in our school as well as providing supervision for students. We recommend that students in grades 7 and 8 stay at school during lunch hour, at least until parents feel the student can manage unsupervised time with peers for 60 minutes during the school day. Students who have permission to leave at lunch time are expected to be off school property for the duration of lunch hour.
The cafeteria will be open before school, during the morning break and the lunch period. Grade 7 & 8 students eat in the cafeteria. Please keep your school clean by remembering to clean the area where you were eating. SCI is proud to be a Green school -- garbage containers, compost bins and recycling boxes are placed throughout the school for your use.
Tobacco & Vaping Products
In order to encourage a healthy lifestyle, Simcoe County District School Board does not permit the use of tobacco or vape products on school property. Please read the information in the Student Handbook. Students using tobacco or vape products on school property such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff will be sent to the office and consequences will be assigned.
Dress Code
All attire must meet the expectations of the SCDSB dress code. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further information.
Student Handbook
The Handbook outlines the policies and procedures in place at SCI. Students and parents/guardians are responsible for reading the information in the Handbook. The Student Handbook is posted on the School Website at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca. If you require a paper copy, please call the school at (705) 428-2639.
